Hi, I’m Mark Johnson. I was born and raised right here in the United States, and I currently live in a small town in Illinois. I didn’t always envision myself as a retail consultant, to be honest. I mean, seriously – did anyone dream of optimizing shelf placement as a kid? But life, as they say, throws you curveballs.
My journey started with a Marketing degree from the University of Illinois. Go Illini! After graduating, I joined a regional grocery chain, Fresh Foods Market. Starting at the bottom, I worked my way up. From stocking shelves (yes, I know where the ketchup really belongs) to managing a whole department, I absorbed everything. Ten years on the front lines – that’s my real MBA.
I saw firsthand what worked, what didn’t, and – most importantly – why. I learned that retail isn’t just about transactions; it’s about people, relationships, and understanding the unique needs of your community.
Frustrated with some of the cookie-cutter corporate strategies, I took a leap of faith. I left Fresh Foods Market to focus on consulting for small, local businesses. Helping them survive and thrive in this crazy world of retail giants? That’s my passion.

I believe in a personalized approach. No two businesses are the same, and their strategies shouldn’t be either. I spend time getting to know the business owners, their staff, and, most importantly, their customers. I analyze data, sure, but I also listen. I’ve seen firsthand that understanding the community you serve is half the battle.
Some might call me old-fashioned, but I believe in the power of word-of-mouth, community events, and genuine customer service. Combine that with smart digital strategies? Outside of work, I’m a volunteer firefighter – yeah, totally different world, right? – and I love spending time with my family. I also have an embarrassing addiction to classic rock; don’t judge. That need for community and helping others… it’s core to who I am.
